Here are some events in the history of AW. The facts are not necessarily correct, so if you have better info please let me know!

- The first large scale commercial networked multi-user virtual world
Habitat was launched.
It was developed by Lucasfilm Games in association with Quantum Computer Services, Inc.
It worked on Commodore 64 computers, and ran for 6 years in Japan and the US.
In Habitat people were represented as
avatars,
a term devised by Chip Morningstar from Sanskrit avatara (incarnation).
The other lead creator was Randy Farmer. The WorldsAway virtual environment is a direct
descendant of Habitat, as is Fujitsu's Habitat II.
- Neal Stephenson wrote the science fiction novel Snowcrash. It takes place in cyberspace
called "the Metaverse", with interface known as "the Street", and center called Black Sun.
The main character is a hacker called Hiro Protagonist.

WebWorld for the Peregrine Systems.
It was the first virtual 2.5D world where 10,000's of individuals could chat, travel and build in,
and visually link to other parts of the WWW
- Chris Cole, the founder of Peregrine Systems, Dave Gobel (da5id/Nethead) from
Knowledge Adventure (makers of 3D Dinosaur Adventure etc), and Cole Larson from Kinetic Effects Inc,
a Simon Fraser University spin-off company
that marketed the Life Forms (COMPOSE) avatar software developed by Kinetic Effects Research Inc
(later Credo Interactive),
founded Knowledge Adventure Worlds (KAW), merging the Life Forms technology with Knowledge Adventure's 3D-environment technology.

web of worlds with a windows-based client. Name Alpha came from the alpha testing stage.
Birthdate for Citizen #1 was 2:10 AM EST (restarted database). The only avatar available was Cy.

"It was Wednesday June 28th, 1995. I don't recall the exact time. I think it
was in the evening though... after a long day of work getting the identity
server to work. My best guess would be around 8:00 pm PDT. On "day one",
people could reserve an identity for the first time. This was the day that
several people beat me establishing their identity. By the time I
immigrated, I was citizen #4! I asked them if I could reset the citizen
database to get citizen #1. They gladly agreed. Within the next few hours we
had our first citizens of AlphaWorld."
